Peterborough and the surrounding area

Peterborough City CentrePeterborough is a city of approximately 200,000 inhabitants and continues to expand.    A new township, "Hampton", is almost complete and includes a school, shopping centre and medical centre.

A number of developments to regenerate areas of the city are underway, with others still at the planning stage.

In 2007, a number of city secondary schools merged to form two new Academies, the Thomas Deacon Academy and the Voyager School.

In addition there are a number of independent schools in the area including Peterborough High School, Stamford Endowed Schools and Oundle School.

Near to Peterborough are a number of picturesque villages and market towns.   It is a mixture of urban together with local rural and agricultural communities.

In the centre of Peterborough is the renowned Norman Cathedral together with a Guildhall and St.John's Church (see above picture).

Peterborough is also home to the Nene Valley Railway, which has featured in a number of major films and TV series.    With the Nene Park is Ferry Meadows, a centre for a number of activities and sports, including sailing.

Each August Peterborough also hosts an annual Beer Festival, one of the largest in England.

Transport

Peterborough is easily accessible from the A1, which lies just to the west, and thePeterborough City Centre A47 link to Leicester.   There is a well-developed ring road system (the "Parkways") which help in improving access around the city.

Both Cambridge and Leicester are easily reached by road from Peterborough.

There is a centrally located railway station and there are plans to develop a new station quarter and supporting facilities, including shops and apartments.

By rail link London is only about 50 minutes away and Edinburgh can be reached within 4 hours.   Peterborough is on the main East Coast Line and also has cross county connections, e.g. to Stansted Airport as well as to the west.
