Course Structure

The Peterborough Vocational Training Scheme was one of the first schemes to be set up in the early 1970s.   It has continued to develop in order to meet the needs of today's GP Trainees and has undergone recent expansion.  

There is a half-day meeting on a Tuesday afternoon throughout the Scheme attended by all Trainees.   

 

Summary of the Course

There is only one intake a year, starting in August for the 3 year Scheme.     9 GP Trainees are appointed each year.    

There are three rotations each of three Trainees and new Trainees are appointed to one of these rotations.   The Scheme contains a total of 20 months in General Practice, of this 4 months in Year 2 and 4 months in Year 3 will comprise part-time General Practice (5 sessions a week) with various Out Patient Clinics (3 sessions a week).  The remaining time in General Practice is as a full-time placement.

  • Medicine
  • MFE
  • General Practice (full time)
3 x 4 month posts in the following:
  • Paediatrics
  • A&E
  • GP/Out Patient Clinics

 

1 Year in General Practice to include 4 months GP/Outpatient Clinics
Rotation 3 3 x 4 month posts in the following:
  • Medicine

Half-Day Release

The Tuesday Half-Day release programme is divided into three terms per year with short breaks for holidays.   The Programme each term is jointly constructed a term in advance by the Trainees and Course Organisers.  The Trainees lead the meetings and guest/resources may be invited to join in discussion of specific topics.     On alternate Tuesday afternoons the Trainees divide into small Case Discussion Groups for the first session of the afternoon.   Each session is led by two experienced Trainers and the membership of each group remains the same for the academic year.    These groups also form the foundation for carried out at the annual full day symposium and the annual residential course.  

An attendance level of 80% is required at the Half-Day Release meetings.   

 

Assessment

The course is designed to prepare for nMRCGP, the components being:

  • Applied Knowledge Test (AKT)
  • Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA)
  • Work Place Based Assessment (WPBA)
